3D Printed Zoetrope Animates Famous Baroque Painting

3D Printing & Imaging Craft & Design

Tired of looking at old paintings in stuffy art museums? Then take a gander at this 3D printed zoetrope called “All Things Fall,” which artist Mat Collishaw made in collaboration with Sebastian Burton in order to bring an action-packed, baroque painting by Peter Paul Rubens to life!

It’s shocking to see how much violence this historic painting, aptly titled “Massacre of the Innocents,” actually depicts when you see the over 350 character figures and environmental elements in motion as the zoetrope spins!

Despite the upsetting imagery that “All Things Fall” illustrates, it’s a fantastic example of how new technology can give our cultural artifacts, such as paintings, new life, especially when they take the form of an antiquated animation technique like a zoetrope!
