Make This Awesome Dune-Inspired Sandworm Bread

Fans of the novel and movie Dune will appreciate this spice-filled sandworm bread recipe from geek baker extraordinaire Chris-Rachael Oseland. Chris-Rachael runs the highly-recommended cooking site Kitchen Overlord (“Your home for geeky recipes, edible art, and nerdy kitchen gadget reviews”) and has written a number of geek-friendly cookbooks.

The sandworm bread consists of a basic sweet bread with a spice filling and a sugar glaze. Yum. Blanched almonds are added to create the sandworm’s intimidating, toothsome maw. I can smell its melange breath from here!

Read the full piece on Kitchen Overlord to learn about the inspiration for the bread, Chris-Rachael’s earlier attempt (which she admits looked more like the beasties in Tremors), and the details of baking the successful recipe. It’s Shai Hulicious! Also, be sure to check out the bottom of the sandworm bread recipe post for more Dune-inspired recipes. She has posted eight additional recipes there.

This recipe and many others will be featured in the next Kitchen Overlord cookbook, Geek Breads, which is coming soon. In the meantime, Chris-Rachael has a number of other cookbooks with such themes as Dr. Who, Tolkien, Settlers of Catan, and steampunk cookery. They’d make great holiday presents for any sci-fi and fantasy fans who are also cooks and bakers.
