GE Integrates Alexa into Spiffy New Light

Black cylinders are out. Circles that double as lamps are in.

GE Lighting has just unveiled the first lamp that fully integrates the Amazon Alexa Voice System. It’s part of GE’s growing efforts to expand its catalogue of IoT products and appliances, and was inspired in part by the winning entries in the recent Lights for Life Challenge held on our community platform. The light fixture doubles as a hub for Alexa, so you won’t need an Amazon Echo or phone to operate, just your voice.

The sleek design is futuristic and, as a light fixture, has added functionality over the Amazon Echo.

The other winning ideas from the Lights for Life Challenge are still being considered for future GE products that blend lighting with technology. The winners made devices like a crib mobile that detects a Baby’s heartbeat, lights that notify you if you’ve been idle too long, and lights that know where you are in the home to adjust the lighting accordingly.
