This Week in Making: Fire Safety Conversations, Laser Snakes, and the Demise of Pebble

On December 2, 2016 around 11:30pm a fire broke out at a warehouse in Oakland, California known as Ghost Ship during a music performance. 36 people lost their lives in the fire. Since then people have been discussing fire safety in DIY spaces and the housing issues faced by artists working out of or living in similar spaces.

Pebble is basically shutting down.

You might be thinking, man, who cares about Pebble, but let me set you straight… Pebble was unique from other smartwatch platforms. Besides being the first commercially available smartwatch, it was hacker friendly, relatively cheap, and gained a pretty loyal fanbase. Those who invested in Pebble’s last Kickstarter won’t be getting their watches, but they will get a refund (though it may take awhile).

Christine Hauser, writing for the New York Times, seems to see this as a sign of a bigger trend: the demise of “gadgets”. I’m sure there’s a number of makers who’d disagree…
