The Sewing Bible By Ruth Singer
If you are a crafter who loves to sew or are just starting out this book, The Sewing Bible: A Modern Manual of Practical and Decorative Sewing Techniques by Ruth Singer must be in your crafting library! This hard cover book is like a modern sewing encyclopedia with detailed step-by-step instructions and accompanying photos on techniques for hand and machine sewing. The techniques covered in the book are really extensive such as pin tucks, smocking, hems, adding snaps, princess seams, frills and ruffles, quilting, and embroidery. The close-up photos are great and guide you even better on all the steps. Masterclass techniques, such as mitered corners, help refine your sewing skills. The machine-sewing ones are particularly helpful for me personally as I always need to know if I’m using the right presser foot or not. This book is a sewing companion at it’s finest!
Sewingbible Projects1
The Sewing Bible also comes with 20 beautiful sewing projects. I love the Circular Skirt (p.270), Book Bag (p. 111), and Gathered Scarf (p.220) that can be worn in a variety of ways.

  1. I really really would love to have this book, I think it’s the thing I’ve been needing to bring my sewing to the next level. I’m pretty much a novice and it’s slow-going since I’ve been teaching myself.

  2. The circular skirt is pretty cute – but the top she’s wearing with it is even cuter! I want to learn how to do ruffles!

  3. Finally, ONE BOOK, instead of a bunch of bookmarked pages that I can never find anything in! Would love to have this. :)

  4. I know just the stocking to put this in for Christmas. My daughter in law is just learning all things sewing and craft. This looks GOOD!

  5. I would LOVE this book…I love to sew and this would be a wonderful resource. Thanks for the giveaway and good luck to everybody!

  6. What a wonderful book to giveaway. Any one of us would be lucky to get this. A great Christmas present!
    Much Thanks

  7. Oh, I could use that sort of books! Sounds like a perfect book to have on hand as my daughter and I teach each other/ourselves more than just sewing rectangles.
Thank you so much for doing these book highlights – without a local bookstore, I really have no chance to browse new books.

  8. I’d be thrilled to win this book! With my Mom living so far away I’m in need of some wise sewing instructions to have on hand. Fingers crossed!

  9. The projects look beautiful. I would love to win this book. Thanks for the review and pattern!

  10. I think this might be just the sort of thing i need to have around the house as i stumble through new sewing projects… Of the gentle arts, sewing is definitely my weakest area!

  11. what a sweet little book! ive just moved to spain and have lots of free time on hand… i could use a sweet little gem like this… :)
    buena suerte!

  12. Thank you for first directing my to this great book, and second for offering it as a giveaway! I so very badly want this! A book that will give me a fast reference and some great ideas all under one cover!

  13. I’ve just started trying to fashion my own projects from tutorials online but i keep finding I make a whole load of bad assumptions and end up with these moster pillows/shoebags. etc. I’ve been looking for a comprehensive guidebook with moderen sensabilities and this looks fantastic.
Did I mention its my birthday next week? :)
    Looks like an exciting book.

  14. Please. This looks awesome! My sewing buddy moved and I don’t have her encyclopedic knowledge to help me with my projects anymore.

  15. I’ve been trying to teach myself how to sew, after attempting to take a class at my college and dropping it because the teacher was terrible. I’d love a book that could give me clear and concise directions on how to sew apparel and other things. This book looks like an excellent resource and I would love to have it in my arsenal.

  16. I just got a sewing machine! Which is a little bit dangerous, as I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m so excited about what I’m making that I decide, “Hey, this looks pretty good, maybe I’ll wear it out tonight”. And then, two hours later, my fabulous new skirt is unraveling all over the party, and I end the evening in a bath towel sarong.
So yes, I’d love to have this book.

  17. I’m just starting out and can’t sew a stitch! I’m hoping that a book like that would help me overcome my sewphobia.

  18. That book is what I need.
although if I had it, I wouldn’t be calling my mom in the middle of a project at 10pm with silly questions like “what a selvege?” and that might be sad.
    that apron is sooo cute.

  19. i’d LOVE to win this book! i am just starting out in sewing and everything can be kinda overwelming. it’d be great to have this as a resource!

  20. I hope I win! I’ve been getting back into sewing this year and have so much to learn. I’d love a good resource book!!

  21. I’ve been sewing for quite awhile now, but I’d love an updated sewing guide like this. Good pictures would be so helpful!

  22. Please please pick me! In the last year, I’ve inherited a machine from my mother, who died after a long-term illness, only to find out that after it had been in storage while she was sick, it had rusted & dusted beyond practicable repair. I traded it in on a nice machine – that was stolen a handful of months later. I finally have another new machine. Now I just need to make some time to learn how to use the danged thing! This book sounds like it would be an enormously helpful resource.

  23. oooh i would love this book as it would make the beasties in my brain so happy AND it would give me a reason to use up all the fabric in my stash which would make my boyfriend happy too! happy all round =)

  24. I want it! It sounds from your review that it does cover basics and more advanced techniques with clear steps which is exactly what I need for both hand and machine sewing.

  25. Ooooohhh I would absolutely love this book! I love sewing but am totally self taught and could really use this! Fingers crossed! And I LOVE Craftzine!

  26. Thanks for the opportunity to enter this contest! Please pick me! I’m using a paperback book from the early ’60s that’s been passed down to me, and is so well-loved there’s no binding left and the pages are crumbling. It now lives in poly zip-bag… and loses a little more cohesion every time I use it. I could really use a book from this century… Thanks!

  27. So excited for this book – vintage style and simplicity with a modern twist – I can’t wait to try a few projects out!

  28. Ooooo… I’m taking sewing at school but we’re in holiday break until Jan so this would be super useful!

  29. This book looks perfect. My husband and I just moved into our first home and I can’t wait to start sewing things for the house. I haven’t sewn since I was a kid but I have taken my mom’s sewing machine and I’m itching to get started. This book would help me remember and learn all the basic things I need to know to sew everything I want to sew. So please pick me, I promise this book will not collect dust on a shelf, it definitely will get put to work.

  30. I have grandiose sewing aspirations (the pile of projects is getting unmanageably large), but lack a lot of know how. Looks like this book would help!

  31. Oooh! I’d like to have this book because I need to fall in love with my sewing machine again and tame the beast that is my fabric stash. Win or not, it’ll be part of my fiber-themed library…

  32. Ohhh!! I would love to have this book. I’m relatively new to the world of sewing and I would love to have more books as a resource!

  33. This book looks brilliant – inspiring!
My sewing machine hates me… maybe this is a way for us to get on talking terms!

  34. My mother is an excellent seamstress, but I’m not! This book looks lovely. Finally some inspiration to learn to sew.

  35. I was just reading about this book and have added it to my Christmas list. But this way, i know for sure i’ll get it!

  36. brilliant! This would be an awesome reference, as I get intimidated asking all the wonderful sewers in my family for advice all the time.

  37. With over 20+ vintage sewing machines in my collection, I REALLY need this book so I can sew creations worthy of my old girls.
    If not….I may just die…
    :0)

  38. I have just been gifted an early Christmas present and it’s a lovely Husqvarna Emerald 118. I’m totally new to sewing and sewing machines, so this book would be the perfect companion.
    Here’s to hoping!

  39. Wow! I really do like the sound of that book and I’m not even a person who can sew normally!
Would love to get my hands on it. Hehe.

  40. That would make a perfect “Happy Christmas to me”! I’m forever inventing projects only to find halfway through that I have to learn a whole new skill to finish them . . . and of course I have to look five different places to get a decent tutorial every time! (Not to mention it’d make my husband ecstatic if I could use up my trunk of material!) Pick me! :)

  41. I have been looking for a book to show me techniques and patterns for sewing. My step-mother gave me her old machine, from the 1960s, and I really want to get started.

  42. I’d love to win this book! I’ve learned to knit, and now I want to learn how to sew, and this seems perfect to learn from!

  43. I definitely need something more reliable than trial and error or looking up things online! I’d certainly like to win it, but even if I don’t, it may well go on my Christmas list!

  44. I love to sew and when my daughter lived at home she never wanted me to teach her. Now that she is 25 years old and lives 1400 miles away she wants to learn to sew. She recently bought a sewing machine and I am giving sewing lessons over the phone! I would love to give her this book.

  45. This looks like just what I’ve been looking for! I’ve recently gotten into sewing more than straight lines and really want to learn more. I’m always so inspired by things on this blog, but I don’t always have the skills to be able to make what I want.

  46. Love all the patterns shown! I’ve just inherited my mother’s old Kenmore machine and am trying to learn to use it. I would be so happy to be good enough to make the patterns pictured….

  47. Man, this book would be amazing for me. I’m in the new stage of sewing and usually just make it up as I go along. I bet my projects would be so much better with a book like this. And I’m completely intimidated by patterns, so I bet this book would make that easier too!

  48. i can think of 5 times in the past three months i’ve needed something like this. the internet is a great resource, but there’s something awesome about having the book with the answers at arms length.
    i’m crossing my fingers!

  49. Man, this book would be great. I’m pretty new at this and usually just make it up as I go along. I’m also really intimidated by patterns, so I bet this book would help that a lot too!

  50. I want and need this book! I want to dream up ways, and need to learn more about sewing while my sewing machine is in the shop for repair (it was submerged in the flood!)

  51. I would love to have this book, it looks great.. and it would come in very handy since I get a new sewing machine in 2 weeks…
    *Katrin

  52. I’ve been looking to get back into sewing and this looks like a great place to start. Thanks for highlighting the book.

  53. This book is a fantastic idea for Christmas presents…would love to peruse one first ;) Thanks for the chance!

  54. I enough to turn my machine on, sew a relatively straight line, and not stitch my fingers together, but I could use a great teaching reference. Thanks for the lovely giveaway! :)

  55. I heart sewing but I tend to be a little sloppy. Its been YEARS since I’ve started (17 to be exact) so its time I man (or um lady) up and do things the way the professionals would.

  56. This book looks fantastic. I like to sew, but I love to embellish the things that I sew–this books looks like it cold help me add a whole lot of fancy to my very basic skills. Thanks for the give away!

  57. This book is amazing. I have recently started using my sewing machine more often for more projects and I would love to own this book to hone my skills. I am a self taught sewer.

  58. How fun are these projects! I have a sewing machine but I barely use it because I just don’t know what to do with it!

  59. I would absolutely love to win a copy of this book. I teach sewing and it would be a great resource to share with my students.

  60. Okay I have to have this book! The pictures are so inspiring! The gingham shirt with the skirt is so adorable! I would love to make use of all the projects and sewing tips. Thanks for the chance to win!

  61. It’s pretty awesome the author’s last name is Singer for a book about sewing. I’ve been using my mother’s Singer sewing machine that she’s had since I was a baby (around 1987). I’m super interested in the little sewing tricks of the trade because I’m trying to acquire skills. So far I’ve made two dresses and some curtains. The bracelet on the cover looks amazing!

  62. I am getting a sewing machine for Christmas this year and this book sounds like the perfect tool to teach me how to sew!

  63. I inherited my grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine. This book would be a great match, for obvious reasons.
And I love the circle skirt.

  64. I’m rekindling my relationship with my ‘regular’ sewing machine after a fascination with machine embroidery that’s gone on nearly a year. Expensive hobby – so I’m returning to my ‘reuse, remake, have fun’ original one. And I can use the help ! Love to win this book, but I wanna look it up even if I don’t win.
Luck and love to everyone !

  66. That book looks stellar! I’m trying to teach myself to sew on a machine and it’s a bit slow going, I’m sure that this book would be a huge help.

  67. It definitely seems like this book would be such a great help for me. I bought my first sewing machine back in April and have played with it a little, but I really wanna start sewing more and don’t have time to take any classes on proper techniques!

  68. I need this book!! I’ve had a sewing machine for 3 years now, and I’ve only used it a couple of times :-(

  69. Cool! I want to learn how to sew better! I don’t want to be embarrassed of my sewing projects anymore!

  70. I would love to have this book! The projects all look so darling, and I’m just a novice at sewing, so this would be great to learn with!

  71. What an awesome book! I need some help and inspiration in the sewing department – I think my mom is finished answering my odd sewing questions.

  72. I’m a sewing beginner so this book would come in really handy for me as I try some more sewing projects.

  73. I would LOVE to win this book! My husband gave me a sewing machine for Mother’s Day. I’d love to try new projects! I’d LOVE to make the apron!

  74. This book looks great for any crafter. The photos of the projects look amazing. I love the circles bracelet.

  75. This looks like the sewing book I’ve been searching for! I have a dusty sewing machine at home that I’ve been too intimidated by to learn how to use! This book will definitely put me on the right path… please?

  76. This sounds like just what I need…I really want to start sewing, but have no idea about any of it. This book would be extremely helpful.

  77. I love crafting/sewing books. Honestly I don’t always make the projects, but I always find them great for inspiration!
    Hope I’m a lucky winner!

  78. I would really love to win this book because I would love to start making my own clothes, starting with a cape because everyone needs a cape!

  79. OMG, this is the book I’ve been looking for since I started sewing! I am not that well off financially, yet, and there aren’t many people around me who sew, and those that do aren’t as willing to take the time to teach me technique, so everything I’ve acquired skill-wise is all self taught, so this book would work WONDERS in boosting my Seamstress’s homeschooling education!!!
Hope I get it, if not, I’ll find a way to buy it!
    Z

  80. I learned how to sew from my mom, so I can figure things out intuitively, but sometimes it would be nice to have a book reference!

  81. Looks like a great reference and it’s pretty to boot! Would love a chance to win it and see the other great patterns that are included!

  82. This book was actually recommended to me by Liesl Gibson at a workshop in Philadelphia. Now I want this book!

  83. This book looks amazing! It would be an excellenet addition to my collection of craft books especially to thumb through on this rainy day… and once school is over! Thanks!

  84. Wow! I had passed this book by in the bookstore a few weeks ago, but it looks really neat here! I’m going back to look for it.

  85. I would love to have this book. I can’t buy it myself (both I and my hubby are currently unemployed), so I hope I can get it at my library if I don’t win.

  86. Always have been fascinating by sewing, but scared to death of sewing machines. Would love to get this book and get over the fear.

  87. I would LOVE this book. I own a sewing machine and try to sew here and there, but I’m really clueless about what I’m doing. I honestly need this :)

  88. The book looks amazing.
It would definitely push me in the right direction of using my fabric that just stares at me.

  89. This book would be wonderful.
It would be nice to have a reference near by to help me understand what the words in pattern instructions mean. My usual source of guidance, my Mom, is many timezones away and not that savvy with e-mail.
The apron pattern is timely. It think I will be trying to make it this weekend so I can wear it on Thanksgiving.

  90. This book would be so helpful! My main sewing guru (my Mom) is many timezones away and usually it’s to late to call when I need sewing advice.
The apron will be an neat (hopefully quick?) project for this weekend.
    Alicia

  91. I’ve just started out and this book would be super great to have! I just inherited a Singer 500a and am trying to learn how to use it.

  92. Me! Me! I’m definitely getting this, win or not, it looks perfect. Thanks for the review and the apron pattern.

  94. I have an old sewing machine passed down from my mom, so it would be great to learn some sewing techniques so that I can dust off the sewing machine! I’m self-taught when it comes to sewing, so I can’t wait to learn how to sew correctly!

  95. Since I only know the super basics of sewing, I think a sewing bible would be an absolutely awesome thing to have. I need to learn some new stuff.

  96. This book would be so handy to have around! My sewing skills are not that great and this would be so helpful!

  97. I could definitely use this book! I’m a beginner and have been so excited about sewing all kinds of things!

  98. I just got a new sewing machine and am picking it up again after 10-15 years away from it…I soooo appreciate any books that can help me relearn!

  99. What a gorgeous looking book! I love sewing and I’ve been looking for a proper sewing reference/bible book for an eternity. It’s hard to find something that’s not too old fashioned and frippy. This looks like the right book AND it has got 20 projects…perfect!!! Currently lying on the sofa at home with the swine flu – bored out of my sense, not allowed to touch anything (except my trusty little computer) and a mask covering half my face…I could sure use a little “pick me up” ;)

  100. After a HARD year im planning to start sewing again this summer (Its gonna be summer soon here) so this book will be fresh air, lovely idea, thanks

  101. What a perfect book to fill in some of the gaps in my sewing knowledge. And it looks so beautiful, especially those vivid colours!

  102. I would love to have a copy of this book, so that I can make even more wonderful Christmas and Birthday gifts. It would be a wonderful addition to my sewing collection!

  105. I want to start an etsy store with my mom but there’s a few things I need to learn first. I think this would be the best book to start with!

  106. Wow! What a lovely book, looks great for me – I really need BASIC, STEP BY STEP instructions when it comes to sewing!

  107. i already have this on my christmas list! i’d be something i’d love to have and check off the list. pick me!

  108. Have just run back from the train station after an 8 hr train ride to enter this comp! Hope I haven’t missed the deadline lol.
It looks like such a good book to have…here’s hoping!

  109. Is the gingham shirt in the book too? I’m guessing not, but it’s PERFECT! Well, the book looks pretty good, I’ve been thinking I need something like this to help me improve my skills to where I’m happy about the things I make as garments, not just fun crafts.

  110. I’ve decided it would be great to make matching nightgowns for my daughter and her doll for Christmas, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. This book sure would come in handy! Who knows what other holiday projects I could tackle, time permitting. Thanks for considering me as your winner.
