The Sewing Bible By Ruth Singer
If you are a crafter who loves to sew or are just starting out this book, The Sewing Bible: A Modern Manual of Practical and Decorative Sewing Techniques by Ruth Singer must be in your crafting library! This hard cover book is like a modern sewing encyclopedia with detailed step-by-step instructions and accompanying photos on techniques for hand and machine sewing. The techniques covered in the book are really extensive such as pin tucks, smocking, hems, adding snaps, princess seams, frills and ruffles, quilting, and embroidery. The close-up photos are great and guide you even better on all the steps. Masterclass techniques, such as mitered corners, help refine your sewing skills. The machine-sewing ones are particularly helpful for me personally as I always need to know if I’m using the right presser foot or not. This book is a sewing companion at it’s finest!
The Sewing Bible also comes with 20 beautiful sewing projects. I love the Circular Skirt (p.270), Book Bag (p. 111), and Gathered Scarf (p.220) that can be worn in a variety of ways.

This book looks like a great resource! If I don’t win I might pick it up anyway! :)
I really really would love to have this book, I think it’s the thing I’ve been needing to bring my sewing to the next level. I’m pretty much a novice and it’s slow-going since I’ve been teaching myself.
I agree. If I don’t win I’ll probably get this book anyway!
The circular skirt is pretty cute – but the top she’s wearing with it is even cuter! I want to learn how to do ruffles!

Finally, ONE BOOK, instead of a bunch of bookmarked pages that I can never find anything in! Would love to have this. :)

Much Thanks
Oh, I could use that sort of books! Sounds like a perfect book to have on hand as my daughter and I teach each other/ourselves more than just sewing rectangles.
Thank you so much for doing these book highlights – without a local bookstore, I really have no chance to browse new books.
I’d be thrilled to win this book! With my Mom living so far away I’m in need of some wise sewing instructions to have on hand. Fingers crossed!
The projects look beautiful. I would love to win this book. Thanks for the review and pattern!

I’ve just started trying to fashion my own projects from tutorials online but i keep finding I make a whole load of bad assumptions and end up with these moster pillows/shoebags. etc. I’ve been looking for a comprehensive guidebook with moderen sensabilities and this looks fantastic.
Did I mention its my birthday next week? :)

Oooooh. Looks like a must-have.
I’ve been trying to teach myself how to sew, after attempting to take a class at my college and dropping it because the teacher was terrible. I’d love a book that could give me clear and concise directions on how to sew apparel and other things. This book looks like an excellent resource and I would love to have it in my arsenal.
That circle skirt is so adorable and I have such bad luck making them.
I’d love to win this. It would make a great Christmas gift as well.
This book might help my utter dumbness in the sewing world.
a_schehr@yahoo.com is my email address

info@projectk.ca
This is going straight into my amazon wishlist. I must have it.
I just got a sewing machine! Which is a little bit dangerous, as I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m so excited about what I’m making that I decide, “Hey, this looks pretty good, maybe I’ll wear it out tonight”. And then, two hours later, my fabulous new skirt is unraveling all over the party, and I end the evening in a bath towel sarong.
So yes, I’d love to have this book.
This book looks fabulous. I am signed up for a sewing class and this would be a super helpful reference book. I need a new religion and this sounds like my kind of bible…
drearosefrostmail@gmail.com
I’m still new to sewing…this book would be great to have!
I would definitely like to learn how to make the circular skirt! Great for the Spring!
please pick me!
I would LOVE this book! Thank you :)
this book looks amazing!
thank you for the giveaway!
This book looks to be just what I need to step up my sewing.
I’m just starting out and can’t sew a stitch! I’m hoping that a book like that would help me overcome my sewphobia.
That book is what I need.
although if I had it, I wouldn’t be calling my mom in the middle of a project at 10pm with silly questions like “what a selvege?” and that might be sad.
that apron is sooo cute.
this book looks like a wonderful resource!
i’d LOVE to win this book! i am just starting out in sewing and everything can be kinda overwelming. it’d be great to have this as a resource!

orangepipp@gmail.com
I’ve been sewing for quite awhile now, but I’d love an updated sewing guide like this. Good pictures would be so helpful!
If i don’t win, it will be on my xmas list.
Please please pick me! In the last year, I’ve inherited a machine from my mother, who died after a long-term illness, only to find out that after it had been in storage while she was sick, it had rusted & dusted beyond practicable repair. I traded it in on a nice machine – that was stolen a handful of months later. I finally have another new machine. Now I just need to make some time to learn how to use the danged thing! This book sounds like it would be an enormously helpful resource.
super cute! please put my name in the hat!
This looks like such a fun book!!
i covet this book. i need this book.
oooh i would love this book as it would make the beasties in my brain so happy AND it would give me a reason to use up all the fabric in my stash which would make my boyfriend happy too! happy all round =)
I want it! It sounds from your review that it does cover basics and more advanced techniques with clear steps which is exactly what I need for both hand and machine sewing.
I aspire to be sew crafty.
This would be so perfect for me… I am so in need of help with the technical stuff!!
I keep meaning to learn to sew–maybe a new book will provide some impetus?
Ooooohhh I would absolutely love this book! I love sewing but am totally self taught and could really use this! Fingers crossed! And I LOVE Craftzine!
Thanks for the opportunity to enter this contest! Please pick me! I’m using a paperback book from the early ’60s that’s been passed down to me, and is so well-loved there’s no binding left and the pages are crumbling. It now lives in poly zip-bag… and loses a little more cohesion every time I use it. I could really use a book from this century… Thanks!
So excited for this book – vintage style and simplicity with a modern twist – I can’t wait to try a few projects out!
Ooooo… I’m taking sewing at school but we’re in holiday break until Jan so this would be super useful!
Oh, this looks kind of awesome! Sewing needs refreshers like this.
la_bitessa@yahoo.com
This book looks perfect. My husband and I just moved into our first home and I can’t wait to start sewing things for the house. I haven’t sewn since I was a kid but I have taken my mom’s sewing machine and I’m itching to get started. This book would help me remember and learn all the basic things I need to know to sew everything I want to sew. So please pick me, I promise this book will not collect dust on a shelf, it definitely will get put to work.
Looks like an awesome book. I love to sew!
So much to learn about sewing. This book looks lovely!
Awesome. My 1970s “Complete Guide to Sewing” has met its match.
I always love to learn new techniques!
I don’t know how to sew by hand or machine, but would like to learn!
Its always fun to have new projects!

I have just been gifted an early Christmas present and it’s a lovely Husqvarna Emerald 118. I’m totally new to sewing and sewing machines, so this book would be the perfect companion.
Here’s to hoping!
I’ve been waiting for this book to come out in the states for a loooong time!
Wow! I really do like the sound of that book and I’m not even a person who can sew normally!
Would love to get my hands on it. Hehe.
Sewing comes as second nature and everyone needs inspiration! <3
cmullen1@umassd.edu
That would make a perfect “Happy Christmas to me”! I’m forever inventing projects only to find halfway through that I have to learn a whole new skill to finish them . . . and of course I have to look five different places to get a decent tutorial every time! (Not to mention it’d make my husband ecstatic if I could use up my trunk of material!) Pick me! :)
Love it! I mostly learned to sew from my mom, so a go-to manual would be fabulous.
I have been looking for a book to show me techniques and patterns for sewing. My step-mother gave me her old machine, from the 1960s, and I really want to get started.
I’ve been trying to get back into sewing and this looks like it would be so helpful!!!
reyrae@gmail.com
I’d love to win this book! I’ve learned to knit, and now I want to learn how to sew, and this seems perfect to learn from!
This book looks so good!
I definitely need something more reliable than trial and error or looking up things online! I’d certainly like to win it, but even if I don’t, it may well go on my Christmas list!
I love to sew and when my daughter lived at home she never wanted me to teach her. Now that she is 25 years old and lives 1400 miles away she wants to learn to sew. She recently bought a sewing machine and I am giving sewing lessons over the phone! I would love to give her this book.
I’d love to learn some more professional-looking finishing techniques from this book!
This looks like just what I’ve been looking for! I’ve recently gotten into sewing more than straight lines and really want to learn more. I’m always so inspired by things on this blog, but I don’t always have the skills to be able to make what I want.
I’d love to get this book! It would be a great resource to jump start my sewing!
Love all the patterns shown! I’ve just inherited my mother’s old Kenmore machine and am trying to learn to use it. I would be so happy to be good enough to make the patterns pictured….
Man, this book would be amazing for me. I’m in the new stage of sewing and usually just make it up as I go along. I bet my projects would be so much better with a book like this. And I’m completely intimidated by patterns, so I bet this book would make that easier too!
i can think of 5 times in the past three months i’ve needed something like this. the internet is a great resource, but there’s something awesome about having the book with the answers at arms length.
i’m crossing my fingers!
Man, this book would be great. I’m pretty new at this and usually just make it up as I go along. I’m also really intimidated by patterns, so I bet this book would help that a lot too!

It’s pretty awesome the author’s last name is Singer for a book about sewing. I’ve been using my mother’s Singer sewing machine that she’s had since I was a baby (around 1987). I’m super interested in the little sewing tricks of the trade because I’m trying to acquire skills. So far I’ve made two dresses and some curtains. The bracelet on the cover looks amazing!
What a neat book!
Yes please! I must have this book! A nice Christmas present for myself! kristinthom@gmail.com

I inherited my grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine. This book would be a great match, for obvious reasons.
And I love the circle skirt.
I’m rekindling my relationship with my ‘regular’ sewing machine after a fascination with machine embroidery that’s gone on nearly a year. Expensive hobby – so I’m returning to my ‘reuse, remake, have fun’ original one. And I can use the help ! Love to win this book, but I wanna look it up even if I don’t win.

OMG, this is the book I’ve been looking for since I started sewing! I am not that well off financially, yet, and there aren’t many people around me who sew, and those that do aren’t as willing to take the time to teach me technique, so everything I’ve acquired skill-wise is all self taught, so this book would work WONDERS in boosting my Seamstress’s homeschooling education!!!
Hope I get it, if not, I’ll find a way to buy it!
Z
oh man, I love that skirt! Would love the book too. great stuff!

I’d love to win this!
This book would be wonderful.
It would be nice to have a reference near by to help me understand what the words in pattern instructions mean. My usual source of guidance, my Mom, is many timezones away and not that savvy with e-mail.
The apron pattern is timely. It think I will be trying to make it this weekend so I can wear it on Thanksgiving.
This book would be so helpful! My main sewing guru (my Mom) is many timezones away and usually it’s to late to call when I need sewing advice.
The apron will be an neat (hopefully quick?) project for this weekend.
Alicia

I have an old sewing machine passed down from my mom, so it would be great to learn some sewing techniques so that I can dust off the sewing machine! I’m self-taught when it comes to sewing, so I can’t wait to learn how to sew correctly!
Since I only know the super basics of sewing, I think a sewing bible would be an absolutely awesome thing to have. I need to learn some new stuff.
This book would be so handy to have around! My sewing skills are not that great and this would be so helpful!
I could definitely use this book! I’m a beginner and have been so excited about sewing all kinds of things!

I would love to have till book! I love the skirt already!
What a gorgeous looking book! I love sewing and I’ve been looking for a proper sewing reference/bible book for an eternity. It’s hard to find something that’s not too old fashioned and frippy. This looks like the right book AND it has got 20 projects…perfect!!! Currently lying on the sofa at home with the swine flu – bored out of my sense, not allowed to touch anything (except my trusty little computer) and a mask covering half my face…I could sure use a little “pick me up” ;)
looks like it has some great projects!!!
This book looks beautiful. I love the circle skirt!
After a HARD year im planning to start sewing again this summer (Its gonna be summer soon here) so this book will be fresh air, lovely idea, thanks
What a perfect book to fill in some of the gaps in my sewing knowledge. And it looks so beautiful, especially those vivid colours!
I downloaded the tutorial, now I only need to find old but nice men shirts!
I would love to have a copy of this book, so that I can make even more wonderful Christmas and Birthday gifts. It would be a wonderful addition to my sewing collection!
I’ve recently become very involved in sewing, but have been teaching myself things piecemeal. This book would come in handy like you wouldn’t believe.
What a beautiful looking book!!
I too instantly fell in love with the circle skirt…very Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday”. I can imagine what a great reference manual this would be…with pretty pictures and bonus projects, to boot!
I want to start an etsy store with my mom but there’s a few things I need to learn first. I think this would be the best book to start with!
PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME!!! I would love to own this book and create some of those fun projects!

This book looks amazing! And I love anything I can make out of men’s shirts! An amazing find. :)
Is the gingham shirt in the book too? I’m guessing not, but it’s PERFECT! Well, the book looks pretty good, I’ve been thinking I need something like this to help me improve my skills to where I’m happy about the things I make as garments, not just fun crafts.
I’ve decided it would be great to make matching nightgowns for my daughter and her doll for Christmas, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. This book sure would come in handy! Who knows what other holiday projects I could tackle, time permitting. Thanks for considering me as your winner.
