We’ve seen many novel uses of the Ford Transit Connect over the past couple of years. Makers have modified this vehicle to suit their needs, be it a mobile photography studio, for remote excursions to a drone launchpad, or even as a delivery vehicle with sliding shelves for micro greens.
Then, last year we solicited submissions from 10 makers or groups of makers to design their Ultimate Maker Vehicle. The entries were equally diverse, ranging from a giant mobile analog arcade game to a robot-repair ambulance. There were variations of the vehicular makerspace concept, including one for disaster recovery and even one that seemed to suggest camping on Mars wasn’t too far-fetched.
Back on earth, resident terrestrials voted for their favorite entry, eventually awarding the top prize of $10,000 to Twin Cities Maker for their Hackmobile design.
Now Casey from CGS Motorsports gives us a tour of the Hackmobile and describes how the project went from concept to reality:
Very cool.
Be sure to look for the Hackmobile on the road near you. It was recently spotted at the Minne-Faire in Minneapolis (thanks John Baichtal for the tip!) and will also be making a pit stop at the 5th annual World Maker Faire New York on September 20 and 21 (purchase early bird tickets before August 1!).
Tweet your sightings — be sure to include the word hackmobile — and I’ll be watching. Or leave a comment below with your thoughts on how you would improve or modify the design for your own Ultimate Maker Vehicle.
