When I was in Portland last year, I visited my friend, Kim, at her hotel. She’d booked a room at the Ace, and though I was completely unfamiliar with the group of hotels before that experience, I haven’t been able to get the Ace off my mind ever since. The design, decor and just … feel of the place was unlike any hotel I’d ever encountered. It was hip and modern while still feeling nostalgic and comfortable. (and the cross-stitched sign in the elevator didn’t hurt, either!) I told my husband that any time we visit a city with an Ace Hotel in it, we must stay there. It truly left me feeling that eager to get back.
Our friend, Mr. Jalopy, over at Dinosaurs and Robots shared this beautiful documentary with Roman and Williams Design, the brilliant minds behind the Ace Hotel in NYC. Hearing their thoughtful descriptions of how and why they design like they do, coupled with seeing glimpses of the NYC Ace makes me want to book a room there … stat. Even if you don’t have a chance to visit an Ace hotel, the conversation with these designers is inspirational and a great reminder with how influential and important architecture and interior design can be. Enjoy!
