The amazing design and architecture team of stereotank made a cool and curious contribution to Design Boom via the site’s DIY submissions feature (where anyone can submit content). They took an ordinary wooden skateboard deck and turned it into a unique-sounding laptop steel guitar.
Here’s how they described the project on the popular design site:
The custom built piece is made from a single blank skate deck, and is capable of producing mellow sound similar to a lap steel guitar. Other components include a 1/4” input jack, electric bridge, pick-up, volume knob, a single lock nut, and six tuning pegs. The ‘lap steel guitar,’ plus its mini amp, are small enough to fit into a backpack. Thus allowing quick and easy transport that even a skater could appreciate.
Stereotank is Marcelo Ertorteguy and Sara Valente. The two graduated from the School of Architecture and Urbanism of The Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2005. In their studies, they began to explore links between architecture/design and music. From there, they moved to New York to pursue a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. They now live in NYC, working as architects, where they focus on researching the relationships between space and sound and designing and building “inhabitable sound instruments and installations.”
