Blending Paint with Crochet in Unorthodox Ways

Gentle Groove,” a current exhibition by artist Angela Teng, presents work that cleverly blurs the line between traditional painting and crafting. She does this by turning acrylic paint into colorful strands that she is then able to crochet like yarn into abstract wall-hanging pieces.

The results of Teng’s innovative process integrate the familiar sheen of a painted surface with the repetitive texture of crocheted fabric in a stunningly unusual juxtaposition of traditional processes and materials.

This indulgence of paint provides visual pleasure, while the tactile and sculptural qualities evoke a direct relationship to the body through the physicality of the paint itself.

The images in the slideshow below illustrate the various iterations that Teng has gone through in order to blend painting with crochet in unorthodox ways, including painting onto crocheted fabric as well as weaving thick layers of paint on top of canvas.

So, if you happen to be in the Vancouver, British Columbia area in the next month, and you’d like to see these unique hybrids of painting and crafting in the flesh, then be sure to stop by Wil Aballe Art Projects where the work will be on display through February!
