Weekend Watch: Epic Haunted House Builds from “Scary Lady Videos”

Terra is one scary lady. The creator behind Scary Lady Videos has been posting videos of her haunted house projects for years and has accumulated an extremely long playlist of spooky project tutorials. These video aren’t just informative, but fun to watch. You can tell from the way Terra talks about her craft, just how much pleasure she takes in it. Definitely contagious!

Many of Terra’s videos cover her work carving pink foam into tombstones and other creations. Foam tombstones may be the staple of any garden cemetery, but Terra gets really creative with what she’s made. In this video Terra shows you how to combine a creepy rubber mask and some foam to get a tombstone that looks like someone’s emerging from it.

She has a whole playlist just devoted to tombstones.

There’s something about mass production that makes something that should be scary and turns it into something quite ordinary. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s all very obviously plastic. Still, you can find a good base for a project at a pop-up Halloween store and turn it into something blood chilling. In this video Terra starts with some store-bought plastic chains, that she admits “look like everything else, kinda boring, not very scary…” and transforms them with the use of pink foam bars, Celluclay spikes, and paint.

Terra makes creating a life-size hellhound seem like an approachable project. Covering a process that can be used for any giant monster, Terra walks you through the steps of using a model to create a template that can be transferred to foam for carving, creating a PVC support, and finishing the surface with details and paint.

Pro Tip: Blue LED lights make flourescent paint fluoresce, so no need for special UV lights.

Here’s another creative take on a tombstone design. She adds a painted skull and a carved snake detail to give this tombstone a voodoo vibe. This design created a couple of unique difficulties: Creating the snake, for example, made Terra “want to drink the whole time” because of how nerve wracking it was to add Great Stuff foam to a practically finished tombstone.

There’s so much more of Terra’s work that I’d love to add because it’s all fantastic. Really! So head over to her channel and get comfortable; there’s hours of good stuff to satisfy any Halloween fanatic.
