IDSA theme this year “DIY: Threat or Opportunity?”

Interesting to see the IDSA (industrial designers conference) addressing DIY. Grace Bonny of Design*Sponge is set to give a keynote:

From innovations in production techniques and materials, to copycats and retail sales, Grace will examine and evaluate both the upside and downside of the revived do-it-yourself movement in design.

DIY design is both friend and foe, forcing designers to think about their creative process, material usage, sustainability and price point. From this revived interest in handmade goods, the design industry as a whole can learn ways to improve their work and counteract the growing competition from less-experienced artists and designers.
