Linda J Mendelson’s Machine Knitted Wearable Art

I got the opportunity to work in the Artists Studios at The Museum of Arts and Design yesterday. I was giving demonstrations with my hacked knitting machine when I happened to get a visit from Linda J Mendelson. While chatting with Mendelson, it was immediately apparent that she was a deft hand with a knitting machine, but it was only when I got home and saw the fantastic machine knitted work on her website that I realized the magnitude of the deft handedness of the person to which I was speaking.

Much of the work on Medelson’s website features a tremendous amount of text, as well as vivid designs, but perhaps what’s most impressive is that these pieces of art are designed to function as wearable garments. There’s just something wonderfully subtle about the way that the poetic verses featured on these works reference the thoughtful process of making them.
