Sewing : Quilting : Plushes

Bonnie Robinson Stewart designs and creates artistic plushes under the name Huggable Koi. These plushes come in the shape of Japanese koi flags, or koinobori, and a growing number of other creatures that include cats, Godzilla, a duckie, and a whole menagerie of other creatures (and vehicles) that Bonnie looks forward to creating in the future.

I started out as a quilter. I made about 60 quilts in 4 years and finally got to the end of my list of all the people I was making quilts for and decided to make something for myself. I’ve always loved Japanese koinobori and have collected them for years. I thought it would be fun to have a pillow version of one. I checked with my Japanese friends to make sure this wouldn’t be disrespectful in any way and they all agreed it wouldn’t be and that they thought it was a great idea.

All pieces are made with cotton quilting fabric, stuffed with raw cotton, are individually numbered, one of a kind, and come with a secret. Each has a different talisman hidden inside to give them a unique personality. Only the new owner of the piece will be told what the talisman is and then it’s the new owner’s secret to keep or share as they please.

Bonnie Robinson Stewart designs and creates Huggable Koi art plushes in her Azusa, California, home. Along with sewing, she also enjoys her day job working as a Production Coordinator at Titmouse Animation, hanging out with her family and friends, picking on her cat, and wandering around Southern California looking for cool stuff to do and see.
