Rachel Hobson’s Incredible Moon Embroidery

Our resident space geek, Rachel Hobson, poured her heart into this magnificent embroidery piece depicting the highly-textured surface of the moon, and it really shows. She entered the piece in NASA and Etsy’s Space Craft Contest in hopes that it might win and have the opportunity to fly in space. Her embroidery didn’t make it through to the voting round, but she’s not letting that stop her from sharing her passion for space and stitching with readers.

Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing more background information on this project. It was my most massive embroidery undertaking to date, and I fell madly in love with it. I’ll share information about the class in which I started the project, some of the stitches I used, some of the threads I used and more information about the moon and why I love it so much. I’ve also set up a page of embroidery and space links in case I’ve inspired anyone to explore these two passions of mine. If you have any questions about either subject, just let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them in the follow up posts.

According to one commenter purporting to be a NASA engineer, the piece has gone viral in the NASA community, inspiring spaceflight smarties everywhere. Check out a few more pictures after the jump.
