World-renowned New York-based Lego artist Nathan Sawaya has a unique and inspired vision when it comes to creating large-scale sculptures from Lego bricks. His work has been shown across the United States and in countries around the globe, including Israel, China, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore. Many of his pieces are currently on tour in an exhibit titled “The Art of the Brick”, which is at Discovery Times Square Museum until January. Sawaya is a bestselling book author, he has over 2.5 million bricks in his studios in New York and Los Angeles, and he never stops innovating.

We’re thrilled that Sawaya will be bringing one of his pieces, named Melting Man (pictured above), to World Maker Faire New York this weekend, September 21 and 22 at the New York Hall of Science in Queens. The piece measures 38″x16″x16″. Sawaya writes, “As the winter season approaches, I wanted to try my hand at ice sculpture. Out of Lego. So I created this Melting Man sculpture completely out of transparent Lego bricks. I also lit it from within, to give it a glowy-feel.” Check out more of his work below and on his site.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
