At the Ozarks Mini Maker Faire this last weekend (September 10), the Maker Faire robot mascot, Makey, was making a lot of friends. This project was the idea of Jeremy Medley. He was talking to me at a Maker Faire meeting explaining that he wanted to replicate our Raspberry Pi Photobooth. He was talking about putting it into a big model of Makey, our Maker Faire robot and I just happened to have a top secret version of Makey ready for papercraft.
Jeremy took this papercraft file and modified it to work with corrugated plastic. It isn’t as simple as just cutting larger, Jeremy actually had to make several changes in how things fit together. One interesting thing that Jeremy did on this project was to fill the legs with heavy expanding foam. This way when people push on the screen, the bot won’t fall over backwards!
The mount to hold the raspberry pi, camera, and display was designed by Josh Hethcoat. As you can see in the pictures, he was really pushing the limits of the physical size that can be printed on that lulzbot taz printer.
This project really was a big hit. People were taking their picture all day long! You can see that not only did Jeremy’s big group photo wish get granted, there was also a surprise photo from some peculiar attendees in costume.
