When I was just starting to learn how to sew—and specifically when I was making my first few garments—understanding fabric grain was huge source of stress for me. It’s such an important concept, because knowing how to place your patterns on the fabric before cutting can have a huge impact on the fit and drape of a garment or whether or not a finished quilt will stretch evenly and lie flat. Once you’ve wrapped your mind around it, it’s not actually that difficult, but it can take a little getting used to. Luckily, the helpful folks at AccuQuilt have put together this fantastic fabric grain guide and video that will take all the grain-related guesswork out of your next sewing project!

Note: In the illustration and in the video, fabric grain is discussed in the context of the AccuQuilt fabric cutting machines, but the same information applies to cutting fabric by hand or with a rotary cutter and cutting mat.
