The Tennessee Sampler Survey is a project founded to “document and preserve Tennessee’s needlework heritage.”
For many years, textile scholars assumed that sampler making was not practiced in the South. Our research has shown that Tennessee girls made samplers from the era of settlement through the end of the 19th century.
Their collection of samplers is available through their web site with zoom-in features and history with each piece. It’s fascinating to look through them and imagine young folks diligently stitching so many years ago. It’s a brilliant way to learn about our past, and great inspiration for future crafting!
