If you are interested in scanning larger objects — people, for example — there are few options on the market better than the 3D Systems Sense scanner.
While on the hardware side it only boasts the same type of sensor that you can find in your XBox 360 Kinect (albeit in a much more handheld, user-friendly form), the software is where the Sense really shines. The Sense software makes it easy to do real-time scanning on machines that don’t have the graphics card required for ReconstructMe or Skanect and even boasts a few scan editing tools that come in handy (like the option to repair holes to make a water-tight scan).
This week, 3DS has announced that they are releasing a free upgrade to the software, making scanning up to 3x faster with a new 25 frames per second scanning speed. This increased speed has also allowed them to help improve scan tracking to help eliminate the cursed “lost tracking” messages while scanning an object. To help sweeten it more, they have added a new tool to help you adjust contrast in your full color prints for more even detail over the entire print. Could this be a sign of something on the horizon to make consumers care more about full color prints?
