Aerial Sports League Ramps Up for Maker Faire Bay Area

The Aerial Sports League, self-described as โ€œone part X-Games, one part NASCAR & one part MMA,โ€ is returning to Maker Faire Bay Area this weekend for its third year to host possibly their largest drone games yet.

Drone sports have only been around for a few years, but the ASLโ€™s prominent 16,000 sq. ft. tent at the 2016 fairgrounds reflects its wildly growing popularity โ€” since its inception in 2013, the San Francisco-based ASL Meetup group has grown to over 1,000 members.

This is the first year that the ASL site at Maker Faire will be indoors, where the newly installed light-up racing track can glow in all of its TRON-inspired, quasi go-karting glory. Hereโ€™s a sneak peek of more than 3,000′ of custom-ordered industrial pool noodles that ASL Founder Marque Cornblatt posted to Facebook that are being installed for the games:

Weโ€™re looking forward to three days of sport drone design competitions, propeller-to-propeller combat, and watching the worldโ€™s leading FPV drone pilots race for fame, cred, and a trip to World Maker Faire this September in New York. The ASL tent wonโ€™t just be a spectator sport โ€” Faire attendees will be able to try their hand at piloting in simple, toy-scale drone training sessions on a first-come, first-served basis.
