Nat @ CRAFT posted up the winners from the CRAFT Valentine’s Day Card contest –
Happy Valentine’s Day Crafters! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our “Recycle Your Heart” CRAFT Valentine’s Day Card contest. We got such creative and amazing entries in that it was hard to pick just 3 winners. Thanks also to our guest judges Megan Reardon of Not Martha, Garth Johnson of Extreme Craft, and Tiffany Threadgould of RePlayGround (formerly Tiffany Tomato Designs).
Each of these winners will receive CRAFT: 02, a CRAFT T-Shirt, and a one month free subscription to The Sampler! Woo!
Winner: Postbird by Ciana Bodini
Flickr Photo – Link.
Description: A beautiful bird is drawn on recycled paper carrying an “I love you” note slyly in his beak. The card folds out so that it can be displayed nicely and lives inside a recycled map envelope.
Megan says, “I like how the recycled materials work in the context of both the overall design as well as the theme of the card. I think the card is simple and sweet, and the message is displayed cleverly. I appreciate that the card unfolds into a presentation of itself.“
Winner: Monster Valentine Card by Blythe Church
Flickr Photo – Link.
Description: Monster Valentine’s Day card with a removable anatomical heart pin. Made using two recycled sweaters, shredded pantyhose for stuffing, felt scraps, safety pin, thread and a button.
Garth says, “This card was a great response to the challenge–it used simple materials, a great concept, and some great crafting. The removable pin is the cherry on top. It’s great to see an entry with layers of intrigue and creativity tied up in a wicked cute package. Snugglicious.”
Winner: Valentine by Emma Axelson
Flickr Photo – Link.
Description: Materials are a used Altoids mints tin (paint sanded off), fortune cookie fortune, cardboard, cardstock, wrapping paper, toothpicks (supporting the wires), wire, and a Coke can (the hearts strung on the wire). And the tempting proposal that’s promised? It’s on the tape… :)
Tiffany says, “This project made the best use of multiple recycled materials and because of it’s 3-dimensional-ness. Nice use of old Altoids tin (it’s always great to come up with an alternate use for them), soda can hearts (I think that’s the part that won my heart), and recycled paper. But hmmm. what’s the message on the tape?”
But wait! There’s more. We couldn’t stop ourselves with the winners. Here are our Honorable Mentions where each will receive CRAFT: 02.
Honorable Mention: Secret Valentine by Genevieve Dionne

Description: A valentine crafted from a nearly empty match box
Megan says, “The cleverness of how this valentine message is revealed creates a
sweet, secret intimacy.”
Garth says, “Holy Cow! Who wouldn’t be charmed by a code-lovin’ sweetheart. Brilliant.”
Honorable Mention: a valenTINES greeting for you! by Rakka
Flickr Photo – Link.
Description: Made from a recycled plastic fork. (I got the fork in a prepackaged lunch, used it, washed it and then formed the heart.)
Garth says, “Simple. Sweet. Clever….and well crafted!”
Tiffany says, “Loved the use of valen”tines” on the fork.”
