Crafter Joe Szuecs, aside from being an all-around great guy, makes incredible, modern birdhouses for fancy feathered friends. I like to think that if Eichler had clients of the avian persuasion, this is what their custom homes would look like. Back in CRAFT Volume 04, Joe shared detailed instructions with us for making these lovely houses. This craft project was an eye opener for me because he starts by saying: “Let’s dispel a common misconception: birds do not need a little peg below the opening of a birdhouse. In fact, this design feature only helps egg-thieving predators.” Who knew?!
I also love the simplicity of this birdhouse design, coupled with its crafting potential. It doesn’t end up looking like 99% of birdhouses I’m used to seeing, and after the build, you end up with a blank slate that you can get crafty on however you please. Here’s some eye candy and inspiration from birdhouses Mr. Joe Szuecs has gotten crafty on:
Joe is also co-owner of a sweet little shop in Northern California called Renga Arts, which carries awesome art made from recycled materials. Check em out! And here’s the Backyard Birdhouse in our Digital Edition, so you can get started building a beautiful home for your neighborhood feathered friends.
