Crafter Joe Szuecs, aside from being an all-around great guy, makes incredible, modern birdhouses for fancy feathered friends. I like to think that if Eichler had clients of the avian persuasion, this is what their custom homes would look like. Back in CRAFT Volume 04, Joe shared detailed instructions with us for making these lovely houses. This craft project was an eye opener for me because he starts by saying: “Let’s dispel a common misconception: birds do not need a little peg below the opening of a birdhouse. In fact, this design feature only helps egg-thieving predators.” Who knew?!
I also love the simplicity of this birdhouse design, coupled with its crafting potential. It doesn’t end up looking like 99% of birdhouses I’m used to seeing, and after the build, you end up with a blank slate that you can get crafty on however you please. Here’s some eye candy and inspiration from birdhouses Mr. Joe Szuecs has gotten crafty on:

Joe is also co-owner of a sweet little shop in Northern California called Renga Arts, which carries awesome art made from recycled materials. Check em out! And here’s the Backyard Birdhouse in our Digital Edition, so you can get started building a beautiful home for your neighborhood feathered friends. To pick up a hard copy, visit out Maker Shed (before they’re all gone)!

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
