Food Makers, Today on Google Hangout On Air, 2pm Pacific (5pm Eastern)

All things food and beverage is the subject of today’s Google Hangout at 2pm PDT (5pm EDT), as MAKE debuts a new bimonthly Hangout on Air. Look for these hangouts to cover the wide world of food and drink from a maker’s point of view.

For our kick-off hangout, we’re going to talk with three people who’ll be presenting at next week’s World Maker Faire in New York.

Today’s guests include:

* John Robb, ex-counter terrorism planner, entrepreneur, astronautical engineer, pilot, Eagle Scout, and publisher of Resilient Communities, a web site about thriving in “turbulent times.” At Maker Faire, John will be giving a presentation on resilient communities–communities that produce their own food, water, energy, products, and network with other resilient communities.

* Jordan Miller, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, is a founding member of Hive76, a hackerspace in Philadelphia, and a RepRap core developer. His research in bioengineering combines chemistry and rapid prototyping to direct cultured human cells to form more complex organizations of living vessels and tissues. At Maker Faire, he’ll use a 3D printer to print out chocolate and sugar creations that he uses to provide templates for casting vascular networks and wireframes for living tissues.

* Dorn Cox and Severine Von Tscharner Fleming will also be joining us from FarmHack. FarmHack offers farmers new opportunities to work together on tools and innovations aimed at making farms more sustainable and efficient. The nonprofit collaborates with engineers, designers, architects, and other non-farmers who want to help strengthen sustainable agriculture. Cox is the director of GreenStart and Von Tscharner Fleming is the founder of The Greenhorns. At Maker Faire, FarmHack will be presenting several ag hacks including a frame-mounted flame weeder, a bike-powered leaf shredder  (http://www.dbco-op.org/projects.html) and FIDO, an Arduino-powered greenhouse monitor.
