When it comes to homemade snacks, nothing beats a freshly popped bag of popcorn. But if you don’t have the time or wherewithal for the stovetop variety of this crunchy delight, then why not make your own microwave popcorn in a brown paper bag? Says Daniel Gritzer of Serious Eats:
Recently one of my colleagues told me that it’s possible to make popcorn in the microwave in a brown paper bag — not the store-bought microwaveable stuff that comes pre-coated in flavors, but my own custom bag of popcorn. I wanted to come up with some fun popcorn flavors anyway, so I decided to test this method out at the same time.
Although you may have to do some research by trial and error to get your bag of popcorn just right, one of the advantages of this process, besides the convenience, is that you can customize your popcorn seasoning to your specific tastes.
When you do experiment with your homemade microwave popcorn flavors, I recommend trying furikake, a savory seasoning that some Hawaiian friends turned me onto many years ago. There’s a handy furikake popcorn recipe over at Honestly YUM if you’d like to give it a try!
It’s also possible to skip the bag and pop popcorn in a microwave-safe bowl (glass is best so you can keep an eye on it) with a microwave-safe plate or lid that fits over the top. The advantage here is less waste — you can eat the popcorn right out of the bowl. However take care handling the bowl because it will be very hot.
