A croque-monsieur is a grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich. Croquer is the French verb “to crunch,” and monsier is … “sir.”
Slap a poached or fried egg on top and it becomes a croque-madame. Well, if you’re feeling incredibly indulgent, you can test out this variant on the croque-madame that calls for pressing store-bought croissant dough in a waffle iron. Even if I never make this over-the-top dish, I would like to try frying an egg on a waffle iron, to achieve that neato egg-white grid pattern.
But someone else can clean the iron afterward.
