Here’s your chance to try your hand at precision fermentation, soldering, and simple programming by making your own Yobot, a yogurt maker that uses an Arduino to run a thermostat attachment that controls the temperature of a crockpot. If you’ve never heard of an Arduino, it’s an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, crafters, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects.

If that description sounded way too long and complex, you could still enjoy delicious homemade yogurt by pooling the various talents of your friends and family and making this a group project. Everyone could use a little Yobot in their life.

I remember my mom’s homemade yogurt back in the late 70s; we ate it with orange juice concentrate and wheat germ or brewer’s yeast, I kid you not. And I also remember that sometimes the yogurt didn’t come out quite right and she’d have to throw out an entire batch. If only Mom had a Yobot to make sure her yogurt always fermented properly!
