When my friends recently tied the knot, they were very clear about one thing – they did not want anyone to deface their car! The list of things that we could not do was long. NO soap on the windows. NO tape on the car. NO cans dangling from the back that might bounce up and chip the paint.
Without too many options left, I devised a plan. Lots and lots of tulle pom-poms in their wedding colors, silver and black. The result was sophisticated, elegant, and fun!
Materials
Tulle netting
Cardboard scraps
Scissors
Yarn and/or lace
Tape (Never use tape on the painted surface of a car)
Make the Pom-Poms
Step 1: Cut a strip of tulle netting for each pom-pom. The width and length of the tulle can vary. For the large pom-poms, I cut the materials 4″ wide and 5′ long. For the small pom-poms, the material was 3″ wide and 3′ long. Wrap the tulle strip multiple times around a piece of cardboard. Wrap the netting tightly, but not too tight! After you have wrapped, remove the cardboard from the middle.
Step 2: Use a piece of yarn to cinch the tulle around the middle. Tie the material closed with a tight knot. Don’t trim the yarn yet- leave the ends loose.
Step 3: Slide your scissors into the folded tulle, and cut through all the layers. Cut both ends.
Step 4: Fluff the layers of tulle into a full pom-pom.
Step 5: Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each pom-pom. Alternate colors and sizes for variety.
Decorate the Car
Step 6: Pop the hood of the car open, and decide how you want to anchor the “V”. I started by threading several yards of lace through the grill. Then I wrapped the lace over the hood and back to the underside. Luckily there were two symmetrical points where I could tie off my lace, but if not, use tape to secure the “V” to the underside of the hood. DO NOT put tape on the top of the hood, or anywhere that you wouldn’t want to peel up paint.
Step 7: Attach the pom-poms to the “V”. Tie them in place using the yarn ends. Mix and match the colors and sizes. This Mini had a scoop in the hood, so I made sure not to obstruct it. For safety reasons, be sure that however you decorate a car, you never interfere with the driveability.
Step 8: Complete the project by trimming the ends of the yarn from each pom-pom.
