Ed Lewis has lots of friends with kids, which means he goes to a lot of birthday parties for the little ones, and is always on the lookout for fun gifts to bring. He came up with the Fast Toy Wood Car as the perfect toy to fit the bill. It’s fun and easy to make, and has plenty of room for customization. Ed shared his how-to on the pages of MAKE Volume 32, and it’s also now available for you on Make: Projects, complete with cutting templates. Cut out the pieces using a laser cutter, hand tools, or power tools, add inline skate wheels, spacers, and locknuts, and you’re quite literally ready to roll. If you get ambitious and make a few, they’re super fun to race.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
