This is star pitcher Mariano Rivera’s final season as a Major League baseball player, and he has whipped some nasty fastballs across the plate in his day. As a farewell gesture, the Minnesota Twins presented him with a rocking chair made of broken bats, a fitting testament to the amount of lumber he’s broken with his speed over the years.
The gift even has a name: The Chair of Broken Dreams. The idea was cooked up by Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire and includes bats that were broken by Mariano’s pitches, as well as bats donated by great sluggers such as Kirby Puckett.
It’s great to see creative reuse being employed as such an honor, but word has not come to MAKE on who actually built the chair. If you know the creative carpenter who put this together, please share in the comments.
