William Tucker tended to get a lot of stares when he drove his modified 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 across the country. The car is actually his daily ride, but he’s modified it to be a replica of (duh) Doc Brown’s Back to the Future time machine.

Tucker started with the vents, and, after getting such a good reception, continued the build to what is now a near-precise replica complete with nuclear cooling vents, a flux capacitor, and a Mr. Fusion. To build it all, Tucker leveraged his mechanical engineering and design background — he teaches product realization as a grad student at Stanford — to build the props and accurately model their interactions.

It’s now 2015, the year of Back to the Future Part II, and Tucker will be at Maker Faire Bay Area, where visitors will be able to sit in the car and push buttons. Careful not to hit those time circuits…
