Picture this: You are walking by a table with a head on it. All of a sudden the eye’s open, fix on you and the “head” begins to growl.
What’s more you can see under the table, but there’s nothing underneath yet the head continues to follow you.
The above image illustrates this idea. While it is a full torso the effect is the same. How did they do it? By placing mirrors underneath the table to hide the person’s body.
