Dan, Dale and some of the MAKE/CRAFT team with be at this event in Sebastopol, here’s a bit about it from Dan (pictured here, some photos from Tom and Wendell Anderson’s high speed photo sessions, they’ll be doing these at the event). If you’re in the area, Sebastopol, CA – check it out…
“The Particles In Motion exhibit that is opening this weekend at the Sebastopol Center For The Arts and running through October 29th. Sponsored in part by MAKE, “Particles in Motion: Work by Ned Kahn and Bruce Shapiro” features art that is based on science, math, or technology. And while the pieces in this exhibit involve changing patterns produced by motion, each artist approaches the concept in a different manner. While Ned’s work is inspired by atmospheric physics, geology, astronomy, and fluid motion, Bruce creates his work with a more high-tech approach in its kinetic design. The movement, patterns, and visual images generated by his pieces are directed by the technology behind the motion control of robotics. If you’re so inclined, I encourage you to indulge yourself and spend a lunch hour enjoying the wonderfully imaginative work of these two local Makers. They’re open 10-5 M-F and 1-4PM on Saturday and Sunday.
Then, on Saturday, October 21, the Center For The Arts is putting on its first Art/Technology day, featuring art with a technology bent from local artisans and Makers. The MAKE team will be on hand demonstrating a few cool DIY projects and of course samples of Make and Craft. We’ve also drafted locals Tom and Wendell Anderson, who will be doing hands-on demonstration of their high-speed photographs of a bursting balloon – a big hit at Maker Faire. Bring a kid and leave with a priceless picture.
We’re also helping the Center beat the drums in a quest for local artists and Makers who might be an interesting addition to the Art/Technology Day. If you know someone who might fit the bill, send me a note or feel free to suggest them directly to Linda Galletta down at the Center For The Arts (lindag@monitor.net). In any event, we invite you to come on out and bring some kids (if you don’t have some, no problem, borrow some from a neighbor).
