If you’re anywhere near Los Angeles this Sunday, November 18, I hope you’ll visit the campus of Los Angeles City College for the second annual Felt Club: XL Holiday event. We’re featuring handmade amazingness from over 70 artists, crafters, and designers from SoCal and beyond–many of whom will be offering holiday-exclusive items, such as these fun “Gingerbread Boy” ornaments from vendor MyPaperCrane.
But Felt Club isn’t just about crafts you can buy (although that sure is handy with the holidays fast approaching!). We’ve also got an entire day’s worth of hands-on classes happening, everything from Needle Felting 101 with Maryjane’s Attic to Bead Simple Jewelry with CRAFT contributor Susan Beal. There will also be a one-hour Craft Biz 101 talk from Craft, Inc. author Meg Mateo Ilasco–a great opportunity for any of you who may be on the fence about starting your own handmade business.
We’ll also be giving away killer door prizes from our vendors and sponsors (sneak peeks are available in our Flickr pool), and swag bags will be given to the first 250 people through the doors. (You can increase your chances of being one of them by purchasing an advance ticket at one of our seven ticket locations throughout LA.) We’ll have food available too, from local fave Auntie Em’s Kitchen–plus music from DJs Dirty Robot and Lance Rock (host of Nickelodeon’s hit kid’s show Yo Gabba Gabba).
If all that isn’t enough to grab you, this year we’ve also got the all-new Maker Square area, a mini version of Maker Faire, hosted by the staff of Make and Craft magazines. If you’re new to the world of Makers, think “offbeat science fair” and you’re not too far off. We’re so happy to be able to add this extra element to Felt Club, which will make things even more fun and interactive. The Maker Square portion of Felt Club will feature people like Syuzi Pakhchyan and her Soft Circuits LED felt holiday ornaments, Mister Jalopy, who will demonstrate his Mobile Drive-In Movie Projector (featured on the cover of MAKE Vol.11), Jason Torchinsky’s “Super Stick“, a 5-foot tall Atari 2600 joystick (which actually works!!), Jed Berk and his Blubberbots, and many more. In short, Maker Square is DIY meets techno-nerdiness at it’s best! Link.
