Introduced back in May, the BeagleBone Green is finally hitting the market.

Back in May BeagleBoard.org, the nonprofit organization that provides education in the design and use of open source hardware, announced their latest project BeagleBone Green. After months of waiting, it’s finally shipping out this week.

In case you’re scratching your head, BeagleBone Green is a joint effort by BeagleBoard.org and Seeed Studio and is based on the open source design of BeagleBone Black, which came out in 2013. Though it has some similar features as the Black, like a 3D graphics accelerator, USB host, and 2×36 pin headers, it boasts some new updates.

The BeagleBone Green borrows a lot of design elements from the BeagleBone Black.

One of the most notable updates are the two Grove connectors that make it easier to connect to other Grove sensors. The new connectors let you directly plug in sensors without needing a Cape. It also has a battery, an updated 5V barrel to micro USB host, and the HDMI port was removed.

The BeagleBone Green is fully compatible with the Black and has a better price. You’ll only have to shell out $39 for this piece of hardware. That’s $11 cheaper than the previous version. Similar to the Black, there is no onboard Wi-Fi, but there is a Fast Ethernet port for all your internet needs.

The open design of the hardware allows people to create what they want, such as different boards and even controllers for 3D printers. As Jason Krinder mentions in the video on the company’s website, this isn’t the first time that the BeagleBone Black design has been used, but it is the first time updates have been made to it — making sure this will be a powerful and efficient piece of equipment. Check out Seeed Studio‘s website to get your own BeagleBone Green and let your imagination, and your programming skills, go wild.
