Anything is possible with the right mix of brains and brawn. And we all know thatย when we get togetherย with our best buds, thingsย often take a hilarious turnย towards the ludicrous.ย Some of the oversized,ย outlandish projects comingย out of makerspaces proveย just how true โ€” andย fun โ€” that is.

STOMPY THE HEXAPOD

One of the flagship projectsย at Artisanโ€™s Asylum, thisย two-ton, six-legged metalย beast will be able to carry twoย riders above its 18′ footprint,ย through almost any type ofย terrain. Kickstarted to theย tune of nearly $100,000,ย construction is underway.

WORLDโ€™S LARGEST VENDING MACHINE

For the 2014 SXSW music festival, North Street Labs, based inย Portsmouth, Virginia, designed and built this six-story interactiveย stage installation to hold 800 bags of Doritos (the full-sizeย variety). An equivalent number of custom release pegs, controlledย by an array of Arduino and Raspberry Pi boards, droppedย the snacks to hungry attendees through tweeted commands.

ALIEN AUTOPSY

Louisvilleโ€™s LVL1 Hackerspaceย created this knockoff of theย classic home game Operation,ย but to a much larger scale andย with an extraterrestrial twist.ย The 3’x6′ space-alien board usesย hemostats connected to buzzerย circuits to sound an alarm if anย amateur pathologist incorrectlyย removes any of the internalsย from the specimen chambers.
