Black Girls CODEย is an organization dedicated to increasing the number of femaleย computer programmers in underrepresented communities through the promotion ofย coding, from Scratch to Ruby on Rails. Founded in April 2011 by Kimberly Bryant, the group has been running workshops and hackathons nearly four years in the Bay Area, New York, and across the US.
On Saturday, December 13th, the BGC teamย is putting on a Robot Expo at UC Berkeley. There will be demos, hands on activities, and presentations. From their site:
Black Girls CODEย is thrilled to host for the first time in the Bay Area an exciting new workshop that’s all aboutย ROBOTS! ย Join us for a fun and captivating educational experience where girls will learn about robots and how they communicate in an engaging atmosphere, combining hands-on activities with Lego WeDo/NXT kits and Robot Simulators and live demonstrations from area robotics organizations. ย They will then rotate to a second session which will be focused on interacting with more sophisticated robots and where they will learn real-world/business applications and uses for robotics.
The event runs from 10am-5pm and is geared towards girls age 7-17. You can buy tickets to the event here.
The team is still looking for volunteers to help with the tech assistanceย (robot building) aspects of the event. You can find the volunteer signup sheet here (the more the merrier!)
And if you’re unable to attend, but want to participate with the group, BGC is hosting two gaming-development events on December 6th, inย Brooklyn and in Memphis, respectively.
