Tucked into the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula of Spain lies the community of Galicia. Last October, the local maker community came together for the first annual Compostela Mini Maker Faire, joining the Spanish cities of Madrid, Barcelona, León, and Bilbao, who also host annual Maker Faires. With five active Maker Faires in the country, there can be no doubt that Spain has a vibrant and enthusiastic maker community. This year, the organizers — Enrique Saavedra and Marcos Saavedra of VermisLab, Matilde Rodriguez, and Chus Prol — are upscaling to a larger-scale event, hosting Maker Faire Galicia on October 1 and 2 at the spacious Palacio de Congresos in Santiago de Compostela. There will be close to 170 maker exhibits this year, and considering last year’s first-time event drew more than 18,000 attendees, this year’s Faire is guaranteed to be even more lively.

The recap video from last year’s Faire offers a snapshot:

Workshops

Maker Faire Galicia offers a full lineup of hands-on activities and an array of workshops, including robotics, wicker weaving, chemistry, rockets, soldering, origami, squishy circuits, and of course parkour.

Panel Discussions

There’s an interesting series of panel discussions and speakers scheduled during the Faire, on topics including accessibility, ecology, collaboration, startups, and drones.

Music

Aside from 170 maker exhibits, workshops, and panels, Maker Faire Galicia is about to get musical. There’s a full lineup of maker music, with a special show by Spanish pop band Hidrogenesse.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
