These exquisitely embroidered plastic bags from a series of works called El Barยญrio Bodega by artist Nicoletta de la Brown seem to make a poignant statement about the impact that disposable materials, like plastic bags, have on our lives.

Resยญcued from the gutยญter; blowยญing down the street like city tumยญbleยญweed. I reclaim and eleยญvate what once was disยญcarded by creยญatยญing embellยญished art objects. Growยญing up in Brooklyn and Harlem Iโ€™d visit my blockโ€™s bodega daily, with penยญnies in hand, and leave with priceยญless treaยญsures. More than just bags, they reflect a sense of pride for my neighยญborยญhood and are a symยญbol of my culยญtural identity.
