Hello, World (and more) on a PDP-11!

Hello World

When I read about the PDP-11 videos, I went directly to SIMH, downloaded, compiled, and installed it. But I couldn’t for the life of me get my program to run after toggling it in. Fortunately, lab[oratory] has posted a great HOWTO that explains the parts that were escaping me:

I will use Bob Supnik’s amazing SIMH simulator and try to have it simulate a machine like the one in the videos as closely as possible. Posts in the series will cover building the simulator and the concepts from the videos: toggling in a program, using the assembler and paper tape and using an editor.

The videos also introduced a lot of concepts that they didn’t have time to cover and I’ll start taking a look into those topics as well. These posts will include mostly operating systems, games (3-D Tic Tac Toe and Star Trek) and maybe language interpreters.

I'm a tinkerer and finally reached the point where I fix more things than I break. When I'm not tinkering, I'm probably editing a book for Maker Media.
