Pink Tentacle has the top 10 robot’s from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry –

“Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced its top ten list of finalists for the 2006 Robot Award. The ten robots selected from 152 applications fall into four categories — service robots, industrial robots, public sector robots, and small- to medium-sized venture robots.

METI established the annual Robot Award this year to recognize outstanding developments in the field of robotics, encourage further research and development, and stimulate demand. Winners of the grand prize and the special prize for small- to medium-sized ventures will be announced on December 21.” [via] – Link.

    This must be a robot vacuum. Ignoring the impossible to decipher kanji, the labels are clockwise from lower left (if you’re interested):

    -some kind of sensors
    -main controller
    -fiber gyro
    -motor driver
    -motor controller
    -blower motor
    -power brush and some kind of nozzle

    And in the next diagram from top to bottom:

    -some kind of panel
    -some switches

    Japan has a pretty low birth rate and their citizens are living longer and longer so it makes sense to build robots that will assist the elderly.
