Steve posing with his Winnebiko II in the late 80s

A big Maker Birthday shout-out to our friend, MAKE contributor, and DIY superhero Steve Roberts. Steve has been artfully hacking the physical world in creative, innovative, and inspiring ways for decades. Throughout the 80s, he biked across America, in his tricked-out recumbent, computerized bikes and wrote a book about the experience — while riding the bikes! A proponent of what he calls “technomadness,” Steve was one of the first geeks to fully grok the liberating, adventure-laden potential of affordable, pervasive communications and computer technology coupled with alternative-powered vehicles. He’s continued this work over the years, moving from land (bikes) to water (microships). We await Steve’s taking to the sky. Micro airships, anyone?

Anyway, Happy Birthday, Steve from all of your pals at MAKE. Thanks for being such an endless source of inspiration and great, practical ideas.
