Welcome to November, Crafters! With last month’s non-stop Halloween fest of fun and craftiness, October just whizzed by. And now we switch gears as we spend more time indoors preparing for the holidays, seeing family and friends, and giving thanks. Many of our posts this month will touch on these themes, but when it comes to our projects, we will explore the many ways we can get creative with Wood.

With the falling of leaves and branches, autumn is a good time to collect wood, not only for your fireplace, but for a warm and natural crafting material. Some of our wooden projects will include inlay jewelry simple enough for the lay person to make, hollow log and knot hole frames from found tree parts, a Thankful tree centerpiece, a display shelf, and a salt bowl with a miniature spoon carved from a fallen branch.
We will also be re-introducing our monthly 101 column, which was a staple during CRAFT’s pulp magazine days. This column will teach crafters a basic crafting technique, and this month, MAKE’s Mark Frauenfelder will be showing us how to use a miter box.
Finally, there is still time to enter your costumes, props, décor, and food into our Halloween contest, hosted by CRAFT and MAKE, which doesn’t end until November 8. We have great prizes this year, including a Singer Futura XL-400 sewing and embroidery machine, GarrettWade dressmaker’s scissors, a Dremel Tool 300, a PanaVise 350, awesome Maker Shed prizes, and more! So don’t pack away your ghoulish items just yet – first enter them in our contest – you’ve still got a week!
A big November THANKS to all of you!
