EFF PVR build-inLast weekend I attended the EFF’s (Electronic Frontier Foundation) "build-in" against the forthcoming broadcast flag, the group built High Definition Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) using the open source MythTV from the KnoppMyth Linux distribution and the pcHDTV HD-3000 HD card, which will only be legal to buy up until July of 2005. I’m writing about all this for the next issue, but here some pictures I took you can check out now…

I interviewed Wendy Seltzer, staff attorney for the EFF and chatted about what the broadcast flag is, why it’s not so good for a lot of people and what you can do about it, we also interviewed some of the folks building the boxes and talked about their setups. This will be one of the first MAKE:audio shows once we get some stuff ready for that, so stay tuned.

EFF HQ in San Fran, one side of it inside was the techies, the other the legal team.

This is a HD Antenna, you can find out which type of antenna you’ll need by using the CEA’s antenna mapping program on AntennaWeb.org,

A system with another type of HD Antenna.

You won’t be able to buy this card (easily) after July, 2005.

Another card shot.

Many of the systems were built from the ground up, right there.

Good ole KnoppMyth.

Some recorded TV on a Myth box.

Later some folks rolled in with some really tiny boxes, these looked liked they’d fit better under the TV.
