Let me wear my Michigan hat for a second. I offer you this wonderful, and very true, T-shirt from Michigan design group The Mitten State, co-founded by Will Bransdorfer and Mike O’Rourke – “It’s Pop Not Soda” jumped out at me yesterday and I had to share for MIdwest readers. And before we go to crazy with the pop/soda comments, I’ll point out that a portion of shirt sale goes to a Michigan charity. And with that… POP vs. SODA – GO!

I grew up in Atlanta and we called anything fizzy “Coke” :)
We call it all “Coke” here in Texas too.
“What do you want to drink?”
“Coke”
“What kind?”
“sprite”
“7-up okay?”
“Sure”
It’s all POP!
Its Pop, the rest of you states need to jump on the Vernors bandwagon. It is the best gingerale in a can.
It’s soda. Says so on the can.
Its all coke in north Florida too :-)
I’m from Western New York (think Buffalo) and we call it pop. The boyfriend grew up further east in soda country. He’s teaching my son to say soda in spite of our geographical area being pop land. I need this shirt!!!
I actually grew up always calling it “soft drink.” Now, I usually say soda. Grew up in South Carolina.
I’m with Mark. In Texas it’s all “coke” and if not, “soda”. Saying pop down here you’ll probably get someone asking you what yankee state you’re from.
I am form Canada and it is called pop here. Canada Dry Ginger Ale is the best pop around. That is what our family says. So goes the pop/soda debate.

Atlantan here as well, and yeah, it’s coke.
If I was forced to use another phrase it would be soft drink.
Soda means club soda.
And pop is what you do with bubble gum.
I grew up in Ohio, and it was always “pop”. That said, I went to school in upstate NY, and started calling it “soda”. I’m not sure if it was regional, or just because most of the students there were from other places.
I’ve always called it Pop but grew up with people that called it soda. My Uncle always said “So-dee Pop”
I’m forever loyal to “pop” though I never, ever drink it. And yes, Verners is good pop.
Pop is my grandpa, soda is the drink.
That is all.
Here in Pittsburgh area it’s POP all the way!!! Pennsylvania is the great carbonated beverage divide!
I’m from Western Australia, and here we call it “soft drink” or “cool drink”; bit longer than the other options! Pop is my grandfather, and soda is the precursor to “soda water”.
As a Michigander, I love this shirt! But when we lived in suburban Philadelphia (loved living there, btw), I learned to say “soda” because of people not knowing what I meant when I asked where the nearest “pop machine” was. When in Rome…
Another Southerner here – I’m from Alabama – and I agree with Mark. Its all “Coke”
I grew up my whole life in Miami, FL and then went to Missouri for college. Never will I ever accept ‘pop’ into my vocabulary. I swear that was left behind in the 1950’s.
Soda for life!
