A Raspberry Pi-compatible e-paper display — the technology used on the Kindle and other e-readers for its low power consumption and ease on the eyes — has nearly doubled its Kickstarter goal of £10,250 by press time, with 17 days left in the campaign.
“I wanted something that would just sit right on top of the Pi with no cables to worry about, and I wanted a real time clock on board as well,” said Maker Neil Matthews, whose device plugs onto the top of a Raspberry Pi unit as if it were wearing a snug hat.
The display conforms to Raspberry Pi’s HAT specifications, fitting the A+, B+, and Raspberry Pi 2 (original Models A and B also work as well, but require light modding). The display comes with a DS3231 real time clock with a CR1220 lithium coin cell for battery backup.
The campaign suggests using the display as a Twitter feed, weather station, or other applications in which low power is needed.
Matthews says he needs to produce a minimum of 250 units for the product to be cost effective. By press time, he had nearly 400 backers who had collectively pledged more than £20,833.
