Jeff writes in looking for “FabLab” fellows in the NY area –
As part of the new Fab Fellow program at the SSBx sponsored Fab Lab, we are looking for folks who are interested in sharing their skills and know-how with community members in exchange for access our tools, workspaces, and resources. We’ve got a rad Mobile Fab Lab onsite and operational now www.ssbxfab.org (complete with laser cutter, CNC router, sign cutter, PCB mill, george foreman grill, etc) which we hope to turn into a permanent community facility. Projects are beginning to ramp up.we’re starting with street furniture and planters for their green roofing company, but we hope to move into other projects that range in scale from tiny electronic gadgets to musical instruments to architecture.
The Fab Fellow program is spankin’ new, so we have not chiseled in stone any procedures, access hours or class schedules just yet. If you have any ideas on how to make it most satisfying for all, then please share your thoughts. We’d like to keep this as open and fellow-mediated as possible. If you are interested, check out the program and fill out an application. Though the deadline on the page says Feb 1st, we are extending it to the 15th. Still, don’t spare the horses. Feel free to contact Fab Lab director Jon at jsantiago@ssbx.org or me at jeff.sturges@gmail.com with any questions, and please feel free to pass this around to anyone else that you think may be interested.
The whole idea of the Fab Lab at SSBx is to provide members of the challenged South Bronx community with training for and access to the tools for “making” in hopes that it may empower people to realize real, build new economies, and improve their environment. The idea seems to have been successful in other parts of the world, so we hope to make it work here. However, we’re going to need some help.
Aside from the Fab Fellow program, we are definitely hoping to make the Fab Lab into a solid community for making and sharing ideas, and we are searching for a more permanent workspace somewhere in the south Bronx.
