Maker Faire comes to Jefferson country as Charlottesville, Virginia celebrates a day of making tomorrow, Oct. 12. The Charlottesville Mini Make Faire will be held at Monticello High School from 10am-4pm. The first Maker Faire in Central Virginia is attracting makers from all over the state and beyond. For a first-time fair, the variety of makers is impressive. Here are some of the standouts:
Ryan Buyssens: I first came across Ryan’s work when I was writing about the North Carolina Mini Make Faire back in June. Ryan makes Intertropes, his take on the the zoetropes of Victorian day. They are mesmerizing, moving sculptures.
Paper Rollercoasters: They are just what they sound like. They’re made by folding, cutting, and taping strips of paper together.
Carry the What: Carry the What is an online 3D printing shop based on open source designs printed on a growing network of home 3D printers.
Cavalier Robotics: This is a FIRST robotics team from Charlottesville City, Virginia. They are a team of high school students and adult mentors celebrating science and technology in Central Virginia. They’ll be showing off some of the creations at the fair.
In addition the makers showing their stuff, the line-up of presentations is impressive, too:
10:30am – Bill Hess will be discussing working with recycled glass, both in art and as building material.
11:30am – Starrie Williamson gives a demonstration of Google Glass.
12:30pm – Lisa E. Friedersdorf, a materials scientist at UVA, will be discussing the latest developments and uses for nanotechnology.
1:30pm – The Southern Seed Exchange will discuss the how and why of saving seed.
2:30pm – Wearable Art Fashion Show. Models will be showing off a wide assortment of fashions including everything from Cara DiMassimo’s Glass Dress to wearable creations from St. Anne’s yearly shows to woven textiles to upcycled clothing. Charlottesville’s Mark Nizer will emcee the event.
