What do you do when it’s snowy outside? At Mr. C’s library makerspace it became an opportunity to build a geodesic reading dome with students. The project came from Make: Paper Inventions, and for very little money involved the students in a project with a big “WOW” factor.
This is one of the coolest cosplay builds I’ve seen in awhile. Inspired by Lord Okkoto from Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, mask and prop maker Nymla first sculpts, molds, and then paints this stunning mask.
Our project editor, Keith, found this stunning lighting project by a maker who writes under the name “sander”. They’ve taken a vintage phone and by suspending and illuminating the receiver created something surreal and just a little bit uncanny. The rotary dial controls the light’s brightness, and they’re thinking of connecting the ringer in the phone to their doorbell.
One of the things that has been really lighting up my week has been following along as Tim Deagan, author of Make: Fire, shares his #firemas flaming Christmas tree build on Twitter (you should follow him, he’s a delight!).
Happy accident while editing #Firemas Tree Build YouTube video, now I want permanent flaming pupils and moustache. https://t.co/4SqrBV6GEs pic.twitter.com/0sHZeM0Ifs

If you love comic books and are looking for a fun and wintery project to express your deep fan love, then head here for some Marvel and DC inspired snowflake patterns. Nothing says “Winter Solstice” like a Thor-themed snowflake.
If you want to add a little excitement to your drinks you can add these fun and juicy jello blobs. This project comes from Kathy Ceceri’s book Edible Inventions and gives you just a taste of some of the delectable projects inside.
By the time this post goes live you’ll have hours (hours!) left to enter our DigiFab Ornament Contest. This year we switched things up and made things a bit more inclusive so people can show off their laser cut, machine embroidered, CNCed, and 3D printed prowess. We’ve already gotten some great submissions (which you can check out here).
Submissions close Monday at midnight.
