I have a confession: I have a something of a compost fetish. I built my first pile when I was 16 years old. I instantly feel in love with the earthy alchemy of the whole process: dumping in a wide variety of yard and kitchen waste, carefully tending it over time, seeing and feeling the heat of the aerobic decomposition process, and then, watching this amazing black, uniform, highly fertile organic material emerge at the end. I’ve had a compost pile ever since. But recently, rats moved into our neighborhood and into my box-type pile, so I’ve only been putting yard waste in it. I’ve been in the market for an off-ground arrangement.
This Instructable shows you how to build a double barrel/drum-type composter. Two barrels might be overkill for my two-person household, but I think I will build a one-barrel version.
